Bielefeld Conspiracy

The Bielefeld conspiracy is a satirical conspiracy theory claiming that the city of Bielefeld does not exist and is merely an illusion propagated by an entity known as "SIE" ("THEY"). Originating from a 1994 Usenet posting by computer science student Achim Held, the joke is based on three questions: Do you know anybody from Bielefeld? Have you ever been there? Do you know anybody who has ever been there?

Official Response and Commemoration

  • April Fools' Day 1999: The city council released a press statement titled "Bielefeld gibt es doch!" ("Bielefeld does exist!").
  • 800th Anniversary (2014): Celebrated under the motto "Das gibt's doch gar nicht" ("Unbelievable!" / "That doesn't exist").
  • 2019 Challenge: The council offered €1 million to anyone providing incontrovertible evidence of the city's nonexistence. When no one could prove it, the city declared the conspiracy ended.
  • Memorial: A glacial erratic block was erected in the historic center near the Leineweber monument, featuring a QR code with background information.

Media and Cultural Impact

The conspiracy has been referenced in the city's marketing and by Chancellor Angela Merkel. A feature film based on the conspiracy premiered in 2010. Similar satirical theories exist for other places worldwide.
